Bigger, Stronger, Faster: WPT Legends Day 1b

by admin on August 22, 2010   TWEETTHIS
in PTSEATS

CroppedImage180320-IMG8812A larger field with bigger names on the second of two Day 1 flights helped the 2010 WPT Legends of Poker almost double attendance from last year in Los Angles Saturday.

The 276 Day 1b players helped make the tournament total 462, dwarfing last year’s 279.

Former Legends champs John Phan and Prahlad Friedman were among the starters, but they were also among those hit the bricks early, joining a long list of big names busting that included Daniel Negreanu, Matt Stout, Lee Markholt, Scott Seiver, David Chui, Daniel Alaei, Eric Baldwin and Kathy Liebert – Who just happened to be playing her record 100th WPT on the day.

Although it was the likely cause for the rise numbers, the fact the buy-in was dropped from $10k to $5k means there will be no WPT made millionaires walking out of the Bike this time around.

The 462 entrants helped create a $2,151,072 prize pool from which 45 places will be paid with $750k reserved for first.

151 players survived Day 1b including names like Justin Young, Phil Hellmuth, Joe Sebock, Allen Cunningham, Jeff Madsen, Jonathan Little, Shane Schleger and Adam Levy.

But while he might receive more notoriety for the vanishing act he pulled at the 2007 WSOP than his more than $2.5 million in career earnings, it was a suddenly resurgent Vinny Vinh who grabbed the end of Day 1b chip lead.

A total of 241 players will hit the felt for Day 2 at the Bike Sunday.

WPT Legends Rides at the Bike

CroppedImage180320-IMG8426The World Poker Tour returned to The Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles Friday for the 2010 WPT Legends of Poker main event.

A total of 186 players entered the $5k tournament on the first of two Day 1 flights, playing a total of six 90-minute levels.

WPT Player of the Year Faraz Jaka was among them, but was also among the first to be relieved of his 25k starting stack.

Joining him on the rail as play continued were names like Greg Mueller, Lauren Kling, 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jerry Yang and WSOPC dominator Dwyte Pilgrim.

While L.A. local Prahlad Friedman won the title here last year, two 2009 WSOP Main Event finalists stole the headlines by making deep runs.

Steven Begleiter spent the majority of last year’s event in the chip lead before busting ninth while Kevin Schaffel made it all the way to heads up before falling to Friedman.

Friday, 2010 November Niner Soi Nguyen started a similar run, moving into the chip lead part way through the day and holding on to a spot among the leaders as play closed for the night.

CroppedImage180320-bellagio-hotel-and-casino-2The World Poker Tour will be taking a little piece of Las Vegas with it when it descends upon London, England at the end of this month.

Two veteran Bellagio floor people will be running the show when theWPT London Poker Classic hits the Palm Beach Casino, Mayfair Aug. 30- Sept. 4.

529234071_ebcb9fde71Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi of Miramar has signed an exclusive deal to become an instructor with DeepStacks Live, a poker training company.

Mizrachi won the $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E event, commonly called The Players Championship, then final tabled the 2010 WSOP Main Event.

Most of Mizrachi’s courses will be taught in Florida, where new laws allow for uncapped play.

It’s vital for Florida’s poker players that they understand the difference in the action, the need to change their approach and how to defend themselves from more experienced out-of-state players.

“I had a lot of options after the WSOP, but DeepStacks Live was the right fit for how I play and how I want to teach others to play. They are the most innovative and hands-on training company,” said Mizrachi, via a press release.

kevin_stani_ept_tallinnPokerStars European Poker Tour Season 7 kicked off in style – and we have our first champion. Kevin Stani defeated Konstantin Bilyauer heads up and became a champion of PokerStars EPT Tallinn on Monday.

The 2007 EPT Prague winner Arnaud Mattern had all the eyes on him when the final started, but it was 27-year-old Norwergian who took down the title and €400,000 first prize.

Stani has been playing poker for seven years after taking up the game while studying Business Management in Dakota. Once he graduated in 2003, he turned pro and has been playing fulltime ever since. He started off only playing tournaments but now splits his time 50/50 between tournaments and cash games.

Dwan Hits $969k for the Week

CroppedImage180320-IMG8770.JPGTom “durrrr” Dwan seems to be making up for lost time by annihilating the competition on Full Tilt Poker.

The young online poker pro originally from New Jersey put in countless hours at the tables this week, played over 7,070 hands and earned $969,145.

Dwan’s victims included Gus Hansen, Niki Jedlicka and Patrik Antonius.

The sheer volume Dwan is able to generate in a week continues to leave his opponents in the dust. Cole South was the nearest high stakes player in terms of hands played but he had only 3,434.

For the year Dwan is now up an astounding $4.8 million.

Meanwhile Ivey continues to be red hot online with another $931k in the bankroll after a busy week.

Ivey didn’t shy away from anyone taking on Dwan, South, NEKOTYAN, Jani Vilmunen, Dan “Jungleman12″ Cates, Observer84 and others while recording over 3,000 hands on the site.

CroppedImage180320-IMG2776.JPGThe PokerStars European Poker Tour’s seventh season kicked off in Tallin, Estonia this week and is already breaking records.

With 182 players entering on EPT Tallin’s Day 1a Wednesday and another 238 on Day 1b Thursday, a total of 420 players ponied up the €4,000+€250 buy-in, smashing all records for a tournament in Estonia.

The total prize pool is a whopping €1,596,000 with €400,000 earmarked for first.

Coming off a final table at IPT Venice last month and a win in the WPT Spanish Championship right before the 2010 WSOP, German Ali Tekintamgac rushed out to the chip lead on Day 1a Wednesday.

A total of 89 Day 1a players made it through to Friday’s Day 2 with Italian Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano, the record holder for EPT final tables (6) and overall cashes (14) hot on Tekintamgac’s heels.

Players from a total of 41 different countries are competing in Tallin.

mike-matusowMike “the Mouth” Matusow backed up his talk this week.

Matusow was in town Sunday to conduct a poker clinic, called Deepstacks Live. Before coming here, he talked about how “Florida players are terrible.”

Tuesday, he supported his argument. Matusow won the main event of the Florida State Poker Championships, a $1,100 buy-in at the Isle Casino and Racing in Pompano Beach.

He won more than $100,000.

And the field was as strong as the Isle has ever seen, with Michael “the Grinder” MIzrachi, David “Chino” Rheem, Hayden Fortini and others entered.

Matusow made news on High Stakes Poker TV show earlier this year when he said he was coming to Florida now that they had “real poker.” Uncapped poker came to Florida July 1.

Said Matusow Tuesday:
