The Team PokerStars pro Takes Home the Top Prize Worth $350,000 and he also claimed Seven Bountier

The final table contestants in the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun $25,000 high roller bounty shootout took their seats at noon EDT today and both the NAPT Live and ESPN cameras were rolling to capture the action. What they saw was one of the most exciting final tables of the year. Team PokerStars pro Jason Mercier dominated play early at the final table, but Sam Stein rose up to challenge him in a heads-up final that lasted four hours. There were three exciting all-in hands played between the final two and in the end Mercier hit hands when he needed to and won the tournament on a fun day of poker in Connecticut.

Here is a look at how much money the players had won in the tournament when the final table began:

Shawn Buchanan, Canada – $80,000 ($60,000 table; $20,000 bounties)

Faraz Jaka, USA – $75,000 ($60,000 table; $15,000 bounties)
Jason Mercier, Team PokerStars USA – $75,000 ($60,000 table; $15,000 bounties)
Sam Stein, USA – $75,000 ($60,000 table; $15,000 bounties)

The final contestants in the event had survived from a field of 35 on the first day. Everyone started from scratch with a chip stack worth 150,000 on day 2 and blinds began at 600-1,200 with a 100 ante. Each player had a $5,000 ante on their head when play began and all of them had an equal opportunity to win the top prize worth $350,000.

Vanessa Selbst won the inaugural NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event for $750,000, outlasting 715 entrants and running over a stacked final table. Selbst won a WSOP bracelet in 2008 and had racked up nearly $1 million in previous live tournament cashes. Also a successful cash player and a respected DeucesCracked coach, Selbst left the tournament circuit last year to attend Yale Law School. The new PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour stop at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT was the perfect opportunity for Selbst to return to the felt and score a victory in front of a crowd of her supporters.

Throughout the tournament, Selbst, known as “fslexcduck” online, demonstrated just how dangerous it is when over-the-top aggression meets intelligence behind a big stack of chips. She crushed her opponents in most of the pots she played and held a giant chip lead for two days, only losing the top spot to Mike Beasley on the final hand of Day 4. At the final table, she quickly regained the lead and didn’t relent until the tournament was hers. First, however, she had to best one of the toughest final tables of the year. The eight players who made the televised final table included Jonathan Aguiar and WSOP bracelet winners Scott Seiver, Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, and Derek Raymond.

Jordan Morgan Leads the Remaining 125 Players with 705,100

Day 2 at the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun $5,000 no-limit hold’em main event saw 443 players return to the felt and by the end of the night the number of participants had shrunk to 125. The money bubble will burst early tomorrow when 104 remain and they will all be awarded at least $7,500. For many that will not be enough. Most of the professionals have their eyes on the third NAPT title to ever be awarded and the first-place prize worth $750,000.

One professional that has a good chance to make a deep run at the final goal is day 2 chip leader Jordan Morgan. He finished play with 705,100 to pace the field. Morgan will have a lot of competition at the top because day 2 of this tournament saw a lot of big names in the game rise to the top. Joining Morgan in the top 10 are Vanessa Selbst, who holds 542,600, James Akenhead with 463,700,Ryan D’Angelo with 450,800, Lars Bonding with 443,100, and Sorel Mizzi with 442,500. Other dangerous players that will start day 3 with a dangerous amount of chips are Peter Jetten, Phil Ivey, Cliff Josephy, Todd Terry, Matt Woodward, and Team PokerStars Canada pro Marcello del Grosso.

The PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour has decided to up the ante when it heads to Uncasville, Connecticut next month.

The original plan to host a $10,000 buy-in bounty shootout at the Mohegan Sun has been shelved in favor of a $25,600 two-day High Roller Bounty Shootout.

The Apr. 12 tournament will feature a $5k bounty on the head of every player, entry into the next NAPT Bounty Shootout for however collects the most scalps, $50k to all the finalist and a winner-take-the-rest final table format.

“I had the opportunity to play in the first High Roller Bounty Shootout at NAPT Venetian in February and I have to say it’s an incredibly exciting format,” said Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negranu. “I am really looking forward to the chance to play again at NAPT Mohegan Sun – and reach the final this time! It’s going to be a great event.”

Mohegan Sun has scheduled a $5,250 Super-Satellite qualifying tournament for the event at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 11, guaranteeing ten entries with two added by PokerStars.net.

The stars are aligned for March and April as prominent poker forces PokerStars.net and Mohegan Sun present the third leg of the North American Poker Tour. This inaugural event to Mohegan Sun, with 38 poker events over 16 days, will feature a $5,000 buy-in Main Event and a $10,000 buy-in Bounty Shootout event, both of which will be produced for future broadcast on ESPN2 and will be hosted by Joanna Krupa of Dancing with the Stars. The events are scheduled to occur from Saturday, March 27th through Tuesday, April 13th, with the Main Event taking place April 7th – 11th. Top poker players like Daniel Negreanu and Greg Raymer are expected to participate as well as players from Connecticut, across the U.S.A. and around the world.

Both $230.00 “Step 1″ satellites and $1,050 “Step 2″ satellites are scheduled daily to make participation in the Main Event accessible to players at a wide range of buy-in levels.
