Six Florida poker rooms are having tournaments, narrowing the field to the top 10 percent each time. Those remaining meet at Derby Lane in St. Petersburg on April 10. The expected total prize payout is $1 million.

Mardi Gras’ first tournament, at its Big Easy Poker Room, sold out at 150 Sunday and players had to be turned away, poker room director Wil Herrera said.

So in addition to a tournament on Sunday, there’ll be another one on March 21. Buy-in is $550.

Tournament poker has been slow at the Big Easy, and Herrera hopes this will stimulate things.
“It’s opening the door to a new more vibrant tournament schedule here,” he said.

The only other South Florida card room participating is the Palm Beach Kennel Club. It has scheduled tournaments at 1 p.m. each Saturday in March. There will be super satellites at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays for $30 with $20 rebuys.

The Florida Million plan is to have two such events each year, with the championship rotating among the six rooms.

mgrasPokerRoom-thumbMardi Gras’ new Big Easy Poker Room is coming together.

The idea is to have a more upscale location on the first floor, where players will have their own entrance and easy access to a full service liquor bar, video poker bar tops and their own dining area.

They hope to open by mid-November, and will have 30 tables. Currently, the poker room is on the second floor, where there are no slots but there is betting on the dog races and simulcast races.

The new room will include the the Bravo system from Genesis Gaming.

“This will allow us to rate and comp our players as a reward for their patronage, expedite seating, and food and beverage service as well,” said Wil Herrera, poker room manager. Mardi Gras still plans on offering high hand promotions, with a special emphasis on no-limit players. Basically, it’s $100 every hour, with $500 at 6 p.m. on weekdays.
